2025 Toyota GR86

Toyota's GR86 enters 2025 with meaningful updates and a special tribute to Japan's famed Hakone Turnpike. The four-seat sports car, developed by Toyota's Gazoo Racing division, continues to prioritize driving engagement through its lightweight, rear-wheel-drive platform and standard six-speed manual transmission (a six-speed automatic remains optional). For the new model year, Toyota has refined the GR86's performance with retuned shock absorbers, revised throttle mapping for better response, and updated electric power steering for enhanced road feel. Adding extra appeal to the 2025 lineup is the limited-production Hakone Edition, of which only 860 units will be available in the U.S. This special model is based on the Premium grade and features distinctive Ridge Green paint and other exclusive touches.

Every 2025 GR86 purchase includes a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), complete with one free High Performance Driving Event, plus ToyotaCare's two-year/25,000-mile coverage of standard scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance.

Trims and Powertrain

The 2025 GR86 comes in three versions: Base, Premium, and Hakone Edition. All of them have the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Purists will be happy to know that the standard gearbox is a six-speed manual; a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional for those who prefer it. This performance model has been determined by the EPA to achieve 20 mpg around town and 26 on the highway with the manual transmission and 21 city/30 highway with the automatic transmission.

Standard Features

The cabin of the Base GR86 features manually adjustable fabric-upholstered front sport seats with side bolsters, plus two foldable back seats. Its other standard features include keyless entry, push-button start, two USB ports, a 7-inch digital instrument display, a leather-wrapped steering wheel (tilt-and-telescopic), LED lights, and heated power side mirrors. The GR86 grips the road with 17-inch alloy wheels with Michelin summer performance tires, while a limited-slip differential helps manage power to the rear-wheel drivetrain.

The Premium is upgraded with an upholstery combination of faux suede and leather, heated front seats, adaptive LED headlights (which turn in sync with the front wheels), a duckbill rear spoiler, aluminum sport pedals, premium Michelin summer tires, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Hakone Edition expands on the Premium’s equipment with Ultrasuede sport seats with tan leather trim and stitching, unique exterior treatments including 18-inch wheels with a satin bronze finish, and interior accents that are specific to the trim. But there’s more to the Hakone Edition than just unique looks: Toyota boosts the performance factor with Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

The GR86 Active Safety Suite is standard on all trims. It offers pre-collision braking and throttle management, lead vehicle start alert, lane departure alert with sway warning, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is added to the Premium and Hakone Edition.

GR86s with an automatic transmission also get adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic braking. All trims have seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control with track mode, traction control, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, hill start assist control, and a rearview monitor with projected path guidelines.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Across the trim range, the GR86 has an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen that’s used to manage Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, and access to Toyota Connected Services. The Base comes with a six-speaker sound system, while the Premium and Hakone versions are upgraded with an additional pair of speakers (total of eight).
