2025 Toyota 4Runner
The Toyota 4Runner has such a strong following that it’s one of those rare models that gets a lot of attention when it’s redesigned. Even people who don’t even plan to test-drive the new 4Runner were excited to see what Toyota had up its sleeve to start this latest generation. For more than four decades, the 4Runner has been recognized as one of the industry’s most iconic overlanders, and that’s underscored in 2025 with the addition of the Trailhunter trim, which boasts the latest off-road hardware from reputable companies like ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID Industries.
Beyond the big picture – fresh looks and new powerplants – the all-new 4Runner brings improved tech offerings, such as the updated Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced driving aids and an available 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone integration. Plus, the luxury-laden Platinum trim makes its debut in the 4Runner lineup.
While practically everything about the new 4Runner has changed, it continues inclusion of the ToyotaCare complimentary maintenance plan (which covers routine oil and filter changes, tire rotations, and multipoint inspections for 2 years or 24,000 miles) and – by popular demand – the fan-favorite power-sliding rear window.

Trims, Powertrain, and Performance
Toyota kicks off the 4Runner’s long-awaited sixth generation with nine trims: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. Two robust powertrains are on tap, with most trims getting the i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder making 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque. For extra power and fuel efficiency, the hybrid i-FORCE MAX combines the turbocharged engine with an electric motor, generating up to 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. This gas-electric setup is available for the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited, but it’s standard in the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. All ’25 4Runners have an eight-speed automatic transmission.
A rear-wheel drivetrain (RWD) with an automatic limited-slip differential is standard in most trims, but part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case is offered for the SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Sport Premium (standard in the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium). The Limited alone is eligible for full-time 4WD featuring a Torsen limited-slip center locking differential, which is included with all i-FORCE MAX-equipped trims.
With the i-FORCE MAX powertrain, the ’25 4Runner returns an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Models with RWD and the standard i-FORCE engine are good for 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway, while their 4WD counterparts achieve 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway. The 4Runner’s maximum towing capacity is 6,000 pounds.
Another mechanical feature of the ’25 4Runner that’s worth noting is the new Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM), which is standard on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter. This disengages the stabilizer bar at the push of a button to give the front suspension increased articulation. Not only that, but the ’25 4Runner also flaunts a 32-degree approach angle and a 24-degree departure angle and is set up with a new Multi-Terrain Select system that functions in 4WD-high and 4WD-low.
Standard Equipment
The SR5 is a solid entry-level adventure rig that packs in fabric upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, manually adjustable front seats, a 60/40-split reclining and tumble-folding second-row bench seat with a retracting center armrest, a 7-inch multi-information display, the Smart Key System (proximity keyless entry), push-button start, manual climate control, rear-seat air vents, and 12 cup and bottle holders. Its exterior highlights include roof rails, auto-on/off LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED fog lights, LED taillights, front and rear tow hooks, an integrated tow hitch receiver, a power liftgate window, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, and rear privacy glass.
The distinctly styled TRD Sport adds heated front seats, single-zone automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a leather-wrapped shift knob, five USB-C ports, a center console 12V power outlet and two 12V AC power outlets (in the second row and cargo area), and side mirrors with turn-signal indicators. The TRD Sport Premium is enhanced with SofTex upholstery, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats with position memory for the driver, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink.
The TRD Off-Road resembles the TRD Sport, but with all-terrain tires, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, crawl control, downhill assist control, Bilstein monotube shock absorbers, fixed running boards, an aluminum front skid plate, and transfer case and fuel tank protection. Meanwhile, the TRD Off-Road Premium blends the upscale features of the TRD Sport Premium and the performance enhancements of the TRD Off-Road.
Active Safety Features
All 2025 4Runner trims have the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist technology suite installed. It features a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing assist, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and proactive drive assist. A blind-spot monitor is also standard, along with rear cross-traffic alert, trailer merge warning, front cross-traffic alert, traffic jam assist, and trailer sway control. The TRD Sport Premium, Limited, and Platinum receive a panoramic view monitor, while the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter get a Multi-Terrain Monitor with selectable front, side, and rear views.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road all get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, an eight-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter step up with a 14-inch touchscreen and a JBL audio system with 14 speakers and a portable JBL FLEX Bluetooth speaker that’s excellent for camping, tailgating, and other vehicle-centered outdoor gatherings.
