2023 Toyota Prius Prime

The Toyota Prius has been redesigned for model year 2023, and so has its plug-in sibling, the Prius Prime. Nearly every aspect of this popular gas-electric vehicle has been overhauled, but the most dramatic change relates to its new and improved appearance, which is sleeker and more conventional than ever.

Recharge Your Drive

The all-new Prius Prime boasts improved handling and gets a revised powertrain that generates 24 more horsepower. Best of all, its all-electric range has increased significantly to 44 miles per full charge - a 19-mile increase over the outgoing iteration. Toyota has really gone all-out in redesigning the Prius Prime, giving it a more competitive edge in the growing PHEV market.

Trims, Powertrain, and Performance

You’ll have a choice of three trims with the front-wheel drive 2023 Prius Prime: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium. Their powertrain pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a single electric motor for a combined output of 220 horsepower. The SE trim is the most efficient since it can travel up to 44 electric-powered miles on a single charge; when the gas engine kicks in, the SE will return a manufacturer-estimated 53 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway. The XSE and XSE Premium return 39 all-electric miles before kicking over to the combustion engine and fuel economy of 50 mpg city/47 highway.

Equipment by Trim

On top of its spectacular good looks, the ’23 Prius Prime is outfitted with a substantial range of amenities. Its exterior highlights are auto-off LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and proximity keyless entry. The interior is nicely appointed as well with push-button start, a steering wheel wrapped in synthetic leather, six USB-C charging ports, a top-mount 7-inch LCD gauge cluster, single-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40-split folding rear seatback, and tonneau cover for the hatch area.

The XSE is enhanced with auto-on LED headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless phone charging, and two second-row cupholders. It’s also eligible for a fixed-glass roof and Digital Key, which is Toyota’s smartphone-based keyless entry/ignition system. The XSE Premium receives those optional add-ons as standard equipment, along with a power liftgate, a driver’s seat with position memory, and ventilated front seats.

Active Safety Features

The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist technology suite is standard in the ’23 Prius Prime. It contains a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, automatic high beams, and proactive driving assist, which is Toyota’s new semi-automated driving system that provides gentle braking and/or steering support in certain situations. Other standard driving aids consist of a rear seat reminder, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, traffic jam assist, and safe exit assist.

Both the XSE and XSE Premium add front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking (which is available for the SE); the XSE Premium can be ordered with a panoramic view monitor and Advanced Park, Toyota’s automatic hands-free parking system.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The SE and XSE both get an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. The XSE Premium is upgraded with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a sound-enriching eight-speaker JBL audio system. All Prius Prime buyers receive useful trial subscriptions to Safety Connect, Remote Connect, Service Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect. With a paid subscription, you can get access to the Drive Connect service, which includes Cloud Navigation with Google Points-of-Interest, Intelligent Assistant voice recognition, and Destination Assist.
