L

Toyota makes sure that the base L transcends its entry-level status by incorporating an array of upscale features such as proximity keyless entry and tri-zone automatic climate control. On its exterior, it gets heated side mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer, LED lights (headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights), and rear privacy glass. The interior highlights are push-button start, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an overhead console sunglasses holder, an assortment of USB ports (one USB-A media and four USB-C charging), two 12V power outlets, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, and 60/40-split second- and third-row seats.

This trim’s infotainment system has an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. The Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite comes standard as well, providing a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control.

LE

The LE is upgraded with more functional side mirrors that have built-in indicators for the blind-spot warning system, which is added to the safety technology suite at this level. It also gets a power liftgate, LED fog lights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

XLE

This mid-grade trim adds a moonroof, roof rails, first- and second-row synthetic-leather seats (SofTex), heated front seats with passenger power adjustments, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a wireless phone charger, and manual second-row sunshades. Second-row captain’s chairs are also introduced, changing the seating arrangement from eight to seven (for those who prefer the higher seating capacity, the bench can be added back). If you’re interested in upgrading the infotainment system, a 12.3-inch touchscreen is available.

XSE

For a sportier appearance, the XSE adds a twin-tip exhaust, striking black exterior accents, a more aggressive-looking front bumper with a mesh grille, and a lower spoiler. Other notable enhancements for this trim include projector-type LED headlights and ambient interior lighting. The options include a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, leather upholstery, and a deluxe JBL audio system with 11 speakers.

Limited

Although the Limited most closely resembles the XLE, it gets the projector-type LED headlights and ambient interior lighting found on the XSE. It also adds sound-reducing front side windows, upgraded side mirrors (power-folding with memory, puddle lights, and reverse gear tilt-down), a hands-free liftgate, high-output LED fog lights, a front doorsill scuff plate, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 120V power outlet, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a tonneau cover for the cargo area. The 12.3-inch touchscreen and 11-speaker JBL sound system listed as options for the XSE come standard on this trim.

A couple of improved driver-assist technologies are provided as well: front and rear parking sensors with reverse automatic braking and a backup camera with dynamic gridlines. Toyota offers an option for a panoramic view monitor, and as with the XLE, the second-row bench seat can be selected in favor of the captain’s chairs.

Platinum

At the height of the Highlander’s trim range, the Platinum represents the apex of luxury. It gets standard rain-sensing wipers, an adaptive front lighting system, illuminated front doorsill scuff plates, a rear bumper scuff plate, a panoramic glass roof, heated second-row seats, a digital rearview mirror, a 10-inch head-up display, and a panoramic view monitor.
